You know him from his countless studio efforts, national tours, and productions of The Wiz and If This Hat Could Talk. Now, see the acclaimed R&B musician Tony Terry live at City Winery this Thursday, May 16th, at City Winery! The show will begin at 8:00 p.m., with doors opening at 6:00.
Tony began his musical journey at the age of seven, when realized his natural talent for singing. He started to truly embrace his artistry at the age of 23. Tony was mesmerized with the television show Fame, which inspired him to attend Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C.
Tony signed a recording contract with Epic Records in 1987 and his first single, “She’s Fly,” was released that same year, making the top 10 on the Billboard R&B singles chart. His Epic debut album, Forever Yours, was released in 1988 and reached the top 40 on the Billboard’s R&B singles chart. He is best known for his 1990 hit single, “With You.” The single reached the top 20 on the U.S. Billboard's Hot 100, and was #1 on the top 10 R&B charts. Tony’s other hits include “Everlasting Love,” “She’s Fly,” “Lovey Dovey,” and “When a Man Cries.”
In 2001, Tony partnered with Yolanda Adams for the Grammy-nominated single, “Gotta Have Love”. He also made his way onto the big screen by performing on soundtracks for Gladiator (starring Cuba Gooding Jr.), Tap (starring Gregory Hines), and King’s Ransom (starring Anthony Anderson). He toured for six years alongside Roberta Flack, with whom he performed beautiful, classic duets. This opened huge doors for Tony and led to an appearance on Sun Splash in South Africa.
Tony has also found success in theatrical productions, including a national tour of The Wiz featuring Grace Jones, Peabo Bryson, and CeCe Penniston. He also performed in If This Hat Could Talk as both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. Additionally, Tony has tapped into the world of opera by performing at some of the most elegant opera houses in the world, including the Sydney Opera Hall and London’s Apollo Theatre. More recently, Tony completed his first gospel album, Changed, in 2006.
